Mentoring Academy is an independent school, serving the greater Bay Area. Our students make a commitment to commute to our location. We target bright, confident, high- achieving students that are seeking a college preparatory high school and may not fit the traditional mold of a large classroom atmosphere. The student body of Mentoring Academy is culturally diverse with a population that is 7% Hispanic, 14% African-American, 72% white and 7% Asian.
School
Mentoring Academy is a comprehensive four-year private high school enrolling 30 students in grades 8–12. The school opened in the fall of 2013 and graduated its first senior class in the spring of 2014. Mentoring Academy was granted accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in May 2107 and holds membership in the College Board and the National Association for College Admission Counseling .
Graduation Requirements
Students are required to take 4 years or 40 credits of English; 3 years of Math or 30 credits (including geometry); 3 years or 30 credits of Social Sciences/History; 2 years or 20 credits of Laboratory Science; 2 years or 20 credits of Foreign Language; 1 year or 10 credits of College Preparatory Elective; 1 year or 10 credits of Visual Performing Arts; 20 credits total of Physical Education throughout the four years; 1 year or 5 credits of Health Education.

We are a college preparation high school. We require our students to meet the A-G requirements in order to be competitive and apply to colleges. Some of our students transfer into our high school and need to remediate or complete requirements in order to graduate. We therefore allow students to walk at graduation if they have met the minimum state requirements. Those students will take a gap year and apply to colleges in the fall after their non-official graduation and must complete their A-G requirements during the summer and the fall. At the time of completion of their A-G requirements, students will receive their high school diploma.
Grade Point Average Calculation
GPA is computed using the above quality points. Beginning with grade nine, all subjects, whether passed or failed, and remediated grades are included in the computation. A minimum of 180 credits is required for graduation . In addition, each student must complete an 80-hour community service graduation requirement. AP and Honors classes are weighted by one point . Grades are recorded on the transcript and GPA is computed in January and May.
