School Year: 2019-2020
We did it! Two years ago, our trip in to the Yosemite Valley was cancelled due to fires during our Fall Retreat. This year, we were able to make it in with first time visits for a number of people. El Capitan and Half Dome were beautiful in the distance but we concentrated on hikes to Mirror Lake and Nevada Falls. We even had a bear sighting.

DONATING THIS SEASON
Hello Mentoring Academy Community,
As Thanksgiving is approaching, I am thankful that we found Mentoring Academy, and for the extraordinary experience it is providing for my son, and all its students. Please see my letter below, and consider a year end gift to Mentoring Academy.
You can even double your gift by making an early morning donation to Mentoring via Facebook on Dec 3 - Giving Tuesday.
Thank you for all you do to support the school.
Wishing you a wonderful
Dear Mentoring Friends and Family,
The Mission of Mentoring Academy is
“to provide for each student, the most effective, personalized, vibrant, human, compelling and engaging learning environment possible,”
based on the fact that “Every person is unique.”
Mentoring Academy is a unique place, just like its unique students. The school recognizes each student as an individual, and helps them find the joy in learning. As one 2019 graduate said “Mentoring allowed me to learn how to learn.”
But Mentoring Academy is also a community that recognizes not all learning is academic. Mentoring students learn about the world around them through service projects, Berkeley Rep shows, the Extraordinary Program, and tea times discussing current events. They learn how to function in a community by cooking for retreats and community dinners, and pitching in when the school needs remodeling, or a school in Guatemala needs a new playground wall. They learn how to express themselves in class, in tea times and on debate teams. The range of what Mentoring Academy offers is impressive given its small size.It is truly and Extraordinary place.
For the school to continue to provide this exceptional experience, Mentoring needs additional financial support. Tuition does not cover the cost of delivering the program in any independent school. Donations from friends and family are necessary. Some additional costs can be covered with grants - but the foundations offering grants want to know if the Mentoring community is supportive. Every donation, no matter the amount, makes a difference to our ability to provide the program, and in showing that the community values the school.
So - Please donate!
1) Consider donating early on Giving Tuesday, December 3, to take advantage of a Facebook matching program.
2) Go to Mentoring’s Website and on the
upper right-hand side you’ll find the DONATE button.
3) Send a check directly to Mentoring Academy, 5951 College Ave, Oakland CA 94618
4) Pledge your donation and we will invoice you for as many months as you wish.
Also - Please check to see if your company has a matching program.
Please share this letter with grandparents, other family members and friends

GLOBAL CITIZEN'S GAP YEAR
Parent Doug Bozick stopped by Mentoring Academy and talked about the benefits of a Gap Year for high school graduates. Working for Global Citizen, Doug discussed what the organization offers a graduate outside the country.
MLK: A DAY ON
At Mentoring Academy, we believe that Martin Luther King jr. Day should be a day ON and not a day OFF. The school spent the afternoon learn about Dr. King. Thanks to John, Adisa, and Joe for leading the charge on this.
It's official! Mentoring Academy's Extraordinary trip for 2020 is.... THAILAND. We'll be working with the elephants, taking a night train to Bangkok, and snorkeling in the ocean with many more adventures planned.
SOUL OF A NATION
Recently, Mentoring Academy visited the de Young Art Museum in San Francisco to see the exhibit SOUL OF A NATION along with the permanent collection of art in the museum. A powerful show, SOUL focused on art from the Black Power Movement from 1963 to 1983 in America. The exhibit doesn't shy away from the history of African-Americans in the U.S.A. but also shows the hopeful and creative side of art from the Black Community. In all, it was a great way to celebrate Black History Month.
